About

JBL ES Series Bookshelf Speakers and Center Channel

Now I had previously reviewed the JBL ES90BK 4 Way Towers that are the super-duper version of these Bookshelves here.  While some of us have limited space and are still looking for solid sound, this is an excellent choice.  For the budget conscious they are both excellent options(especially at these prices!)

JBL ES20

The manufacturer description:

The JBL ES20 is a three-way bookshelf speaker designed to give your home theater sytem the best possible sound for either a home theater system or for just listening to music. It comes in both cherry and black and is designed and built by JBL who builds systems for both home and professional use. These speakers are designed to utilize JBL's technology to give you higher highs and excellent imaging for the best possible sound.

Important Specifications:

  • Speaker Type 3-way - Passive
  • Max (RMS) Output Power 240 Watt
  • Response Bandwidth 60 - 40000 Hz
  • Input Impedance 8 Ohm
  • Recommended Amplifier Power 125 Watt
  • Sensitivity 86 dB
  • Crossover Frequency 3300Hz,12000Hz
  • Magnetic Shield Yes
  • Connectivity Technology Wire
  • Detachable Grills
  • Gold-plated connectors
Now these speakers and the JBL ES90BK 4 Way Towers are timbermatched speakers; same enclosure and build.  This is because they are the same series of speakers JBL ES.  As a result, these speakers could be used as Rear surround speakers (D and E in the diagram) and or Surround back speakers(F and G).  Now don't sell these speakers short.  They can also be easily used as fronts(A and B) because unlike most bookshelf speakers on the market, these have a 5 1/4" woofer in them (giving them a wider frequency response).

A little more about the build:
Each JBL ES20 was built with:
  • 1 x Woofer driver - 130 mm - PolyPlas
  • 1 x Tweeter driver - 19 mm - Titanium laminate - Elliptical Oblate Spheroidal (EOS)
  • 1 x Super tweeter driver - 19 mm - Polyester - Elliptical Oblate Spheroidal (EOS)

For the center channel to match with these and or the JBL ES90BK 4 Way Towers is:

JBL ES25C

Now when you're creating a home theater, if you are planning on mixing and matching models of speakers, ensure the entire front end is timbermatched.  In other words, if you're going to by two front speakers one kind. Get the matching center channel.  If you mess up the front end, you're screwed. So if you're using the above bookshelves, or JBL ES90BK 4 Way Towers here it is.

The manufacturer describes as follows:

The JBL ES25C is a 3-way center channel speaker(C in the diagram) that uses dual 5 1/4" drivers for excellent audio performance. These speakers come in both cherry and black. JBL is a leader in both home and professional speaker design and they all that technology to make these speakers the best speakers to listen to either your home theater or favorite music. You will get outstanding high frequencies which enable you to hear all that the music or movie has to offer.

Furthermore, these speakers also have larger than normal woofers for a center channel.  If you like deep sound the ES series is perfect.  It doesn't miss out on the highs either as the tweeters in these speakers are excellent.
Each JBL ES25C was built with:

  • 2 x Woofer driver - 5 in - PolyPlas
  • 1 x Tweeter driver - 0.75 in - Elliptical Oblate Spheroidal (EOS)
  • 1 x Super tweeter driver - 0.75 in - Polyester - Elliptical Oblate Spheroidal (EOS)

Yes I know I still haven't shut up about JBL but I am a longtime JBL fan who has never been let down by their build quality and audio accuracy.  If you're extremely budget concious and you're looking for the quality and accuracy?  You won't find a better buy. In fact, for the same price you''ll get complete garbage for the most part.  (For example, the center channel here whose MSRP is $350 is selling for less than half the price!)

If you're mixing and matching between the models and you would like more information on speaker placement?   You can more detailed information on speaker placement here.

Sorry, if you've got any hardware like this?  You're going to have to figure out placement on your own.  I only give Home Audio advice ;)
