I've noticed a massive number of consumers out there love their Sony products. Well, with cheap audio and home theater development in mind I thought I would review this product, the Sony SS-B1000 bookshelf speakers, SS-CN5000, .
These are also ideal for someone on a budget who is looking for a pair of speakers to create a 7th channel or a 7.1 surround setup from their 5.1 surround system, or even if you just need rear speakers in your 5.1 system.
Firstly, lets talk about the SSB-1000 Bookshelf speakers by Sony.
Kevlar and H.O.P. Cone MaterialsThe 5-1/4" Kevlar H.O.P. (Highly Oriented Polyolefin) woofer delivers definitive bass with clear lows. Kevlar fiber represents an ideal mix of strength and low weight. Traditional driver materials must increase mass to provide greater amounts of rigidity. However, these traditional materials tend to be slow and inaccurate. Kevlar material combined with H.O.P. equals extremely high strength and low mass. This allows for high power handling and ideal response.
Nano-Fine Balanced Dome Tweeter1" Nano Fine balanced dome tweeters provide startling resolution for the vocal range, bringing you closer to the original artists' recording. Sony speakers are engineered to extract all of the detail that new high-resolution audio formats can provide. The Nano-Fine tweeter has frequency response well beyond the 20 kHz of CD audio, extending to 50 kHz. The Nano-Fine is extremely still and light, which represents ideal properties for a tweeter.
High-Resolution Sound ReproductionThe 80-50,000 Hz frequency response in the SS-B1000 bookshelf speakers offers a wider range of tones available than from comparable small-sized speakers. So you hear every note, every change, and every beat with crystal, high-resolution clarity--and all from a supremely compact and easy-to-place pair of speakers. No need for bulky, room-filling speaker cabinets to enjoy your favorite music and movie soundtracks.
- Frequency Response: 80 - 50,000 Hz
- Impedance: 8 Ohms
- Power Requirements: 120W
- Dimensions (Approx.): 6-11/16 x 10-1/16 x 7-1/16" (400 x 170 x 216mm) each
- Weight (Approx.): 6 lb, 6 oz (2.9kg) each
Sony SS-CN5000 Center Channel
As I explained earlier. If you want to just add rears to your 5.1 system or a rear surround back 7th channel for a 7.1 system those bookshelves can fulfill this no problem. However, if you're creating a surround system using these speakers its important you "Timbermatch" and get the matching center channel to create a sound that is consistent.
This matching Center Channel is the Sony SS-CN5000
- Dual 5.25" H.O.P. cone drivers
- 1" nano-fine balanced dome tweeter
- 150-Watt maximum input power
- 8-ohm speaker impedance
- New BRAVIA matching design
If you noticed frequency response you may have noticed that the range is 80-50,000 Hz. Purchasing bookshelf speakers will always have a lacking lower end on the response. For those of you who have no idea what I'm rambling on here about. Frequency response essentially tells you the range of sound the speakers can create. Essentially, smaller woofers higher end of the spectrum(can play high frequency sounds...closer to the "trebley stuff"). These bookshelves have 5 1/4" woofers so they can create some lower sounds than other bookshelves but any self respecting home theater enthusiast would require more lower frequency sounds. These sounds are where voices, explosions or anything deeper will be more prominent.
A subwoofer will resolve this issue or if you would like a lighter option, use tower speakers for the front right and left speakers.
The Towers made for this series have all the same materials that the bookshelves were built with but the 8" Kevlar H.O.P. (Highly Oriented Polyolefin) woofer and 3-1/4" enhanced H.O.P. mid-range cone make the three way speaker that is capable of 45000 - 50000hz
Sony SA-W2500 Subwoofer
If you can't afford putting towers in the front and a subwoofer, I would recommend just stick with bookshelves and get the subwoofer. By adjusting the crossover, you can have it compensate for the bookshelves deficiencies.
Mica-Reinforced Cellular Woofer
The 10" mica-reinforced cellular woofer delivers the full range of crisp, clear lows for room-shaking bass that's never muddy. Mica reinforcement of the woofer cone material represents a favorable mix of strength and low weight. Traditional driver materials must increase mass to provide greater amounts of rigidity. However, these traditional materials tend to be slow and inaccurate, resulting in muddy, distorted bass. Mica reinforcement of the cone material equals extremely high strength and low mass. This allows for high power handling and ideal response.
High-Resolution Sound Reproduction
The 28-200Hz frequency response in the SA-W2500 subwoofer offers a wider range of tones available than from comparable woofers. So you hear every rumble, every shift, and every beat with crystal, high-resolution bass--and all from a compact, easy-to-place woofer. No need for bulky, room-filling speaker cabinets to add depth to your favorite music and movie soundtracks.
