Yamaha NS-SP1800BL 5.1 Affordable Home Theater Speaker Package

I saw that this was an extremely popular 5.1 speaker package and as a result, I thought I would take a look and see what the fuss was about.  Yamaha, in my opinion creates top of the line audio receivers.  Speakers I wasn't so sure of.

What we have here, Yamaha NS-SP1800BL 5.1-channel home theater speaker package is an excellent option for those who are looking for surround sound and want to save money.  It comes with 4 satellites, a center channel and a Powered subwoofer.

This speaker package is made up of the following:

4 Satellite Speakers

* 2-Way Acoustic Suspension
* 2.5" cone woofer and 1/2" dome tweeter
* Input Power (Max/Nominal): 100W/30W

Center Speaker

* 2-Way Acoustic Suspension
* Dual 2.5" woofers and 1/2" dome tweeter
* Input Power (Max/Nominal): 100W/30W

Powered Subwoofer

* Advanced YST
* Output Power: 50 Watts
* Driver: 8" Multi-range

The NS-SP1800BL features advanced Yamaha active servo technology (Advanced YST) is a unique system in which the speaker and amplifier work together to cancel out impedance so the speaker unit has a perfectly linear motion. Advanced YST helps to ensure the highest levels of sound pressure and overall performance.

Now as I am not a fan of satellites and didn`t know about this technology(YST) I thought I would read up on it.  What I found surprised me.
Key Benefits
  • Incredible bass from a smaller cabinet. Advanced YST subwoofers and speakers can easily reproduce a much lower bass response than a similarly sized alternative speaker.
  • Easy and convenient placement due to the smaller size of the speaker and cabinet.
  • Better imaging - Imagine sitting in the front row at the symphony. Close your eyes and visualize the placement of the members of the orchestra. The ability to reproduce this spacial quality of sound is known as imaging. Speaker size is one factor that can drastically contribute to imaging accuracy. Advanced YST speakers are small enough to have excellent imaging characteristics, yet still accurately reproduce tones from the very low bass of a pipe organ to the highs of a triangle and cymbals.
With all that being said, I listened to these speakers and the range they could produce surprised me.  Still they are satellites so they cannot offer what a full size loudspeaker can but needless to say, I was still impressed by the quality of highs and ....lows it was able to produce.  The convenience of wall mounting, and the size are also definite pluses while the biggest selling feature of these speakers is the price.  You can buy these speakers today for about $100.  Now you really cannot go wrong.  You need a set of 5.1 speakers to get things started, if you can`t afford more?, you have no room for or dont want big speakers?  Well whatever reason, for under $100 these speakers are a steal that have pages and pages of rave reviews.
